Temperature Sensor Notifications

Have you set up your Notifications? You can get notified by email or push notifications if there was an out of bounds temperature reading or a sensor connection outage.


Safe Food Pro Temperature Sensors are not sold as a continuous Temperature Monitoring solution. While they can be configured to send an email notification when the temperature goes out of range, an email will be sent at most up to 2 hours while the temperature is out of range. We advise checking the readings on the dashboard or the equipment itself if you receive one of these emails, to check that the temperature is as expected, e.g. the fridge is in a defrost cycle.

Notifications:

There are two types of notifications that can be sent out by the temperature sensors, when the temperature reading of a sensor is out of range of the expected temperatures, or when the sensor is offline. You can set up a notification to selected users about both types of issues, so that you can keep any issues under control.

To set up a user to receive notifications:

  1. Login to the Administration Console (Computer) 
  2. Go to Staff & Users 
  3. Click the pencil icon to open the user
  4. Scroll down to User Notifications 
  5. Check the relevant boxes for the user depending on what type of notifications they need to receive.
  6.  Click SAVE

Select the options that suit you the most: 

  • The "Email" option will send an email notification to the user's email address. 
  • The "In App" option will send a push notification to any mobile device that the user's email address is logged into.
  • "Temperature Sensor Reading Out of Bounds" boxes the user will receive a notification whenever the temperature of the equipment goes outside of the expected range. 
  • "Sensor Not Sending Readings" boxes the user will receive a notification whenever there is a sensor outage. 

Temperature Out of Range Notifications:

Temperature out of range notifications let you know when your equipment goes outside of the required temperature range for a longer than expected amount of time.

When a notification is sent it's dependent on the "Out of Range Duration" time for the equipment. When a piece of equipment first goes out of the set temperature range, it waits at least the "Out of Range Duration" time and then sends a initial out of range notification on the next out of range reading (so this could be 15 minutes or more than the "Out of Range Duration" set). If the temperature goes back into the temperature range, no notification is sent. 

Further notification will also be sent up to 2 hours after the first reading while the temperature sensors are out of range.  An additional alert will be sent after 24 hours if the temperature is still out of range.

This means that you can set the "Out of Range Duration" to be longer than any expected temperature spike, such as a defrost cycle, so that you do not receive notifications several times a day when your fridge defrosts.

Below is an example of choosing an appropriate Out of Range Duration. With a duration of 45 min, users with temperature out of range notifications will receive emails during defrost cycles which is expected behaviour. By setting the Out of Range Duration to 75 min instead, the users are only notified when something goes wrong.

When you receive a notification, check your dashboard or the piece of equipment, to make sure nothing is wrong.

Device Outage Notifications:

If your sensor stops sending readings a red alert message will appear on the dashboard. It's really important to keep an eye on these outages or set up your outage notifications, to make sure you keep getting your temperature readings.

Outage notifications will be sent whenever an outage starts for a sensor. This notification will be sent as an email to the specified users and, if these users have a mobile device logged into their email, a push notification will be sent to the device.

Two outage emails will be sent on the first day of the outage and then one per day on the following two days.

Outages for the temperature sensors can happen for many reasons such as:

  • Your Hub has been switched off at the power
  • Internet outages
  • Interference in the Fridge e.g. steel containers placed in front of sensor, a new delivery of goods blocking sensors etc
  • Hub is too far or has too many barriers between the sensor, this makes the reading weak which makes outages common

To check if any of these are a problem:

  • On the hub, check that the power light is on
  • Check that the hub's Net light is on
  • Move items about in you fridge that may be causing interference
  • If you are able to, try move the hub closer to the sensors
